First Stop: Hraunfossar & Barnafoss Waterfalls

Iceland is known for its world-renowned waterfalls and Hraunfossar and Barnafoss surly do not disappoint. A breathtaking site– you’ll get once-in-a-lifetime views of glacier water powerfully tumbling through cracks of hardened, black lava formations. On a clear day, Barnafoss will exhibit a fluorescent blue glow, almost mirroring the color of the sky. It’s a guarantee that some of your favorite photographs in Iceland will be taken at this stop.

Second Stop: 1100 year old Víðgelmir lava cave

Just 30 minutes outside of Reykjavík, this main attraction is a geological gem. The best parts of the Víðgelmir lava cave is that it can be visited by travelers of any age and requires minimal with a small amount of mobility. You’ll get to see beautiful lava features, ranging in different shades of crimson, and learn about how lava flowed to create this natural spectacle. When hiking deeper into the cave, the ice will quickly and mercifully give way to an ascending and descending pathway of rock falls. Even though the cave tour is only 1.3 kilometers long, it will take you at least an hour to reach the back of the cave. For the non-caver, this tour offers a glimpse into some interesting geology and a view of real ice stalagmites. On a good day, the view just outside of the cave is astounding, featuring the Westman Islands, Eyjafjallajökull, Tindfjallajökull and Hekla along the horizon. All in all, this cave is sure to live up to whatever expectations you may have.

Third stop: Húsafell Geothermal pool

If you don’t have a chance to make it to the famed Blue Lagoon, this is an ideal alternative. The Húsafell geothermal pool offers a stunning, postcard-worthy scenery of the snow-capped mountains during sunset. At this complex, there are three warm pools including a small slide for kids making it the perfect way to kick-back, relax, and chat with other travelers about your favorite views of the country.
