Nordic Swan Ecolabel

The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is the official Ecolabel of the Nordic countries, a voluntary and positive practical tool for consumers to help them actively choose environmentally sound products and services. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel is an ISO 14024 type 1 Ecolabelling system and is a third-party control organ. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel demonstrates that a product or service is a good environmental choice, without compromising the quality.
It is important to us to offer our guests facilities and service that treat nature, environment and culture with repect. We have therefore chosen the Nordic Swan Ecolabel as our tool to ensure that our operations are in harmony with our vision.
The three HI hostels in Reykjavík have received the Swan certification. Reykjavík City HI hostel was the first one to receive the label in 2004, Reykjavík Downtown HI hostel in 2010 and Loft HI hostel in 2013.
Here are the reports from 2016 and 2017 and 2018 and you can find our newest report here Svan Annual Report 2019.
To become a Swan certified service is a longterm process. It is neccessary to adapt the business to a comprehensive criteria that changes with time to comply with the newest legislative and new green trends. To ensure that we fulfil this we monitor our operations vastly and continuously look for innovative solutions that make it possible for us to do better. Now, everything from washing liquid to lighting and furniture is chosen according to the criteria. But we also invite our guests to participate in the processes designed in the hostels.

HI-Q and HI-Q&S

The Hostelling International Quality Management System (HI-Q) takes best practices from quality systems around the world and tailors them to the specific needs of HI associations and hostels. The certification proves that all processes and their quality level within the organization are therefore documented, trained, constantly communicated within the team, checked, measured and if needed, improved.
The HI Quality & Sustainability (HI-Q&S) certification is a quality management system to be merged with our standards in sustainability and a tool to educate, implement, monitor and audit the standards in a hostel. It enables us to consistently improve and deliver high standards to ensure you have a great hostel experience.
HI-Q is being implemented in key HI Hostels worldwide on top of Assured Standards. HI Iceland has proudly participated in implementing those standards. A few of our hostels have already received the label of HI-Q and HI-Q&S and are therefore able to display the distinctive logos – look out for it in the HI Hostels you visit all around the world.

HI Iceland is a member of Festa. Festa is the Icelandic Center for Corporate Social Responsibility and was founded in October 2011. It is a non-profit organization. The goal of the center is to assist companies in implementing CSR strategies, raise awareness about CSR and encourage related research in cooperation with Icelandic universities. Some of the benefits being a member of Festa are participating in shaping the concept of CSR in Iceland, acquiring knowledge and support on their CSR strategies and learning from each other while showing their true commitment to being responsible companies.
