Reykhólar HI Hostel

Located in a small village on the edge of the West Fjords, Reykholar HI Hostel faces Breiðafjörður bay with it‘s thousands of small islands teeming with wildlife. The house was built in 1947 for an experimental research station, making it a piece of history in itself. Enjoy a walk in the low birch forest surrounding Reykhólar then relax in the private hostel hot tub and sauna. An excellent place to venture on day trips to Rauðisandur, Látrabjarg and other must-see wonders of area.

In the area:

  • Learn about Icelandic salt production at the Norðursalt factory, where they combine two forces of nature: geothermal energy and the Arctic Ocean.
  • See the endless red sands of Rauðisandur beach and how its colour changes with the weather.
  • Drive to Látrabjarg, the westernmost point of Iceland (and arguably Europe). It is Europe‘s largest seabird cliff and home to puffins, razorbills and many others. On the way, stop by Hnjótur folk museum with it´s collection of fishing boats and historic airplanes.

At HI Iceland, we strive to meet and exceed the standards expected of us as a leader in sustainable travel. We take an active role in promoting sustainability within our community and we lead by example, and by good actions and practices in our operation.
