Lava cave, thermal pool and waterfalls
Go back in time in this amazing cave tour that features the 1100 year old Víðgelmir. A true magical underworld.
The lava cave, Víðgelmir is one of the world's largest known caves and is situated in the Hallmundarhraun lava field in West Iceland. The cave is 1600 metres (5250 ft) long and is a part of the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The lava field is the biggest in the Borgarfjörður area and was formed in an eruption around the year 900.
Víðgelmir features amazing colours and lava formations that lurk in the depths of the earth. It has beautiful ice formations that change constantly all year round and due to a unique formation in the lava, the ice can even close the cave completely. There are many spaces with well-preserved lava stalactites and stalagmites.
On the way to the cave, we will visit the most powerful hot spring in Europe, Deildartunguhver, and the picturesque Hraunfossar waterfalls, a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming out of a lava field.
With the aid of a walkway and feature lights the stunning enormous beauty can now be enjoyed with comfort and ease, enhanced only by the cave expert guides.
After the cave visit, we will visit the geothermal pool in Húsafell where you can relax in the warm water.
