Landmannalaugar tour to the interior highlands of Iceland
Leaving from Reykjavík, this Landmannalaugar tour takes you up to the interior highlands of Iceland to Landmannalaugar, often referred to as "The Pearl of the Central Highlands". You will journey through the beautiful countryside and farmlands of southern Iceland into Þjórsárdalur valley where you can explore the picturesque Hjálparfoss waterfall and surroundings.
Proceeding from Hjálparfoss waterfall the tour takes you through the highlands of Iceland past lakes and rivers up to the Landmannalaugar area which is one of Iceland's grandest and most photographed landmarks.
Characterised by multicoloured rhyolite mountains, the Landmannalaugar area is known for dramatic lighting and an array of colours including yellow, pink, flourescent green and purple, brown, black and white.
While there, you can enjoy a relaxing bath in a natural warm pool which was created when many hot and cold springs in the area combined. Alternatively you can take a leisurely hike into the multicoloured mountain of Landmannalaugar.
Heading back from Landmannalaugar the tour continues westwards passing Mt. Hekla, one of Iceland's most formidable and infamous volcanoes that for centuries was believed to be the gateway to hell. Since the time of settlement around 1000 years ago, Mt. Hekla has erupted numerous times blanketing Iceland with thick layers of ash and pumice. In the past few decades, Mt. Hekla has erupted roughly every ten years.
Returning to Reykjavík the tour takes you via Hellisheiði.
Note
