Iceland's Best Kept Secret?
No trip to Iceland is complete without a visit to Vestmannaeyjar, an archipelago composed of 14 small islands featuring stunning volcanic landscapes and rich birdlife. The islands are the largest puffin colony in Europe and at Stórhöfði cape, the southern tip of Heimaey island, you might get a chance to see the brightly beaked Atlantic puffin up close.
Sometimes referred to as the Pompeii of the North, in 1973 the townspeople of Heimaey had to evacuate the island for months because of a massive volcanic eruption. The award-winning Eldheimar museum exhibition tells the story of the eruption and is not to be missed.
The Vestmannaeyjar Hostel is located in the town centre, with everything you need within walking distance.
