The hostel is located at the center of town, in an old house built as a hotel during the golden years of Siglufjörður. The rooms are well equipped and comfortable and the common areas are great for relaxing or chatting to your fellow travellers.

Siglufjörður used to be the herring capital of Iceland and a thriving colourful town with a goldrush-like atmosphere. Signs of its past glory can still be seen, and an interesting museum, The Herring Era Museum, breathe life into the remarkable past of the town which peaks during the Herring Adventure festival in August that draws thousands of visitors to Siglufjörður. Another festival, the Folk Music festival, is held by the Museum of Icelandic Folk Music in July.

The nature surrounding is renowned for its beauty and is perfect for ourdoor activities. Siglufjörður is a skier’s paradise, has outstanding slopes and surrounding valleys make great trails for cross-country skiing, and is the ski-area in Iceland which normally opens up first in the autumn and closes last in spring. The fjords and valleys in the area are popular for bird-watching and hiking, and have a number of marked hiking trails, both for day hikes and longer treks. A hiking map can be bought at the hostel.

Museums

The Herring Era Museum is Iceland’s largest maritime museum. The Boat House recreates the town’s bustling harbour of the 1950s, with many old fishing boats at the dock. Grána, a herring meal and oil factory of the 1930s shows how men and machines processed herring into meal and oil.

The Folk Music Centre in Siglufjordur is located in Madame House where the Rev. Bjarni Thorsteinsson lived from 1888 to 1898. The centre brings to life the world of Icelandic folk music. Visitors cansee video recordings of people of all ages chanting epic poetry (rímur),  singing quint-songs (tvísöngur), reciting nursery rhymes, and playing folk instruments such as the langspil (similar to dulcimer) and the Icelandic violin (fiðla).

Boat trips

Midnight boat sailings and trips over the Arctic Circle are available. Tours can be arranged according to different areas of interest, e.g. you can organise a hiking and boat trip package that allows you to hike to Hédinsfjördur and return by boat.

Hiking

A wide range of hiking trails wind through Fjallabyggd up onto the mountains or along quiet valleys where you can enjoy unparalleled views in peace and tranquility. Many enjoyable hiking trails have been created and signposted in recent years. Their length and difficulty varies, so everyone should be able to find a trail that suits
