Hostel Details

Reyðarfjörður is a town of 1500 inhabitants and conveniently located for exploring the East Fjords

The Hostel is located in two cozy houses on the same street. Vallargerði 9 houses the reception and a café where meals are served for lunch and dinner, and light refreshments and snacks are available throughout the day; Belgian waffles and crépes are the café’s specialities. Vallargerði 14 has a guest kitchen and a barbeque, where you can prepare your own meal and mingle with your fellow travellers, and a sauna which you can use for a small price. Both houses have well equipped bedrooms and spacious and comfortable common areas, perfect for reading and relaxing and writing those postcards that you meant to send. For those that do not want to part with their laptops during their vacation there is free wireless internet at the Hostel, and other guests can use a computer for the internet at the reception, also free of charge.

There are plenty of leisure activities to do in Reyðarfjörður. For the outdoorsy traveller there are marked hiking trails in the area, varying of length and challenge. Just out of town is the headland of Hólmanes, an ideal site for outdoor recreations, whether among the cliffs or at the shore and offers an abundant birdlife and peculiar rock formations. A hiking map can be bought at the Hostel. Reyðarfjörður was the second largest of the Allied bases in Iceland during World War II and in the old camp above the town is a highly interesting museum on WWII and life in Iceland during the war. The Hostel owners have a boat and sometimes invite the guests to go for a fishing trip and to admire the mountains from sea. At the end of town is a pond where you can try out your skills in fishing, and if it’s raining or you are tired you can always go to the pool and relax in the hot tubs.

All basic services are available in the town, such as supermarkets, post office, bank and cash dispensers, restaurants, etc.

The Icelandic Wartime Museum

In the Second World War Reyðarfjörður was occupied by the British and there are quite a few remains around town. The museum was built in 1995 to give people insight into the life in Reyðarfjörður during the occupation.

During the winter time it's possible to go skiing in Oddskarð, a short drive from Reyðarfjörður.
