Reindeers, seals and a week with your very own horse - Húsey hostel offers a completely unique experience in east Iceland

The house is a pleasant old farmhouse which has been converted to a Hostel. The area around Húsey is very spectacular and a "paradise" for nature lovers. Two large glacial rivers flow towards the sea through the wide plain around Húsey Farm. Húsey is a breeding ground for more than 30 different kinds of birds and here you will also find around 175 species of plants.  Large numbers of seals travel quite some distance inland where they rest on the riverbanks and sandbanks.  In springtime and autumn wild reindeers come close to the farm.

Horses are bred at Húsey, and the farm offers short and long treks, which makes it ideal for beginners as well.

"Seal Watching on Horseback“, is a specific guided horse riding tour offered daily at 10.00 hrs and 17.00 hrs. This ride takes you to the best places for watching seals and you will also be able to see many different species of birds and find out quite a lot about the surrounding countryside. This tour can be booked in advance. See here for further information.

Our "Holidays with the Icelandic Horse" package includes a one-week stay at Húsey, with excursions on horseback being organised. You can also plan your day as you wish and the staff at Húsey will be pleased to advise you.

In addition we offer guided excursions on horseback for groups of riders.

Húsey is off the beaten tourist track, which is why you can enjoy almost complete peace and quiet and absorb the land and nature – relax in the cosy farm house and enjoy the spectacular view, try a fresh walk along the footpaths or a horseback to experience the landscape with its changing moods. At Húsey you will find that you are in close contact with nature.

In 2008, Soil Conservation Service of Iceland – (Landgræðsla ríkisins) awarded the hostel manager at Húsey, Örn Þorleifsson, a special award for his work towards land improvements including the prevention of land erosion by sowing specialised grasses in the area of Héraðsflói, and the production of an eduation programme for school children.

Húsey hostel has also been awarded with “The Rock” that is awarded to those individuals who over many years have been at the forefront of travel service in east Iceland. They are the rock which the tourist sector is built on and for many years have encouraged interest by foreign tourists to visit East Iceland. In 2012 “the Rock” was awarded to Húsey.
