Grundarfjörður, right in the palm of the majestic Snæfellsnes peninsula, is the perfect location for a whale watching. 

Grundarfjörður Hostel is located in a small and picturesque fishing village surrounded by amazing mountains, and the town itself is the most centrally located on the Snæfellsnes peninsula; its strategic location makes it an ideal stop from which to explore the beautiful landscape of this area characterized by majestic mountains, diverse birdlife, waterfalls, lava fields, lovely beaches, open sea and the well known Snæfellsjökull glacier. 

Grundarfjördur Hostel was originally composed of a double storey red house, but it has recetly expanded to include other buildings in town. Some of the rooms offer private facilities. The reception remains in the original address of Hlíðarvegur 15, and it is open from 15:00 till 21:00pm in the summer, except if differently arranged. 

The hostel offers a wide range of accommodation: beds in shared dorm,  single and double rooms, family rooms and also private apartments. Bed linen and towels are available for a small extra fee that is not included in the price.

Services in Grundarfjörður include banks (with cash dispensers), restaurants, a supermarket, a petrol station (also the local bus stop), a mechanic and a small museum and information centre.

There is a multitude of activities accessible in town or in the surrounding area: mountain climbing, hiking, swimming, scree running, fishing, golfing, horse riding, sightseeing, snowmobiling and much more.A variety of daily boat trips are also available from Grundarfjörður Harbour during the summer: birdwatching, puffin spotting, romantic sunset experience and sea angling.

Boat trips

A variety of daily boat trips is available from Grundarfjörður harbour during the summer to explore the fjord. Ideal for birdwatching, puffin spotting, romantic sunset experience, and at times, whale watching

Black Sand Beaches

For centuries Dritvík on the southern part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula was one of the busiest fishing-stations in Iceland, once inhabiting 600 seasonal workers.There is a walking path to the shore (Djúpalónssandur), where there are four well-known lifting stones which fishermen would try their strength at They had to be able to lift at least the smaller ones to get a job.

Glaciers

The Snæfellsjökull area is dominated by the three peaked volcano and glacier Snæfellsjökull (1446 m high) which is believed to be a place of supernatural power.It is one of the most famous volcanoes in Iceland and has been  featured in novels by Jules Verne and Icelandic writer Halldór Laxness. Today Snæfellsjökull is the youngest national park in the country and there are several hiking trails to enjoy.

Hiking

There is a beautiful and striking coast line between Arnarstapi and Hellnar with interesting rock formations, basalt columns, gorges, caves and sea bird colonies. In Arnarstapi you will see the stone monument to the hero Barður Snæfellsás, who protects the area from evil as the local legend has it. There are several marked hiking paths to the caves and sea bird colonies.

Museums

The Eyrbyggja Heritage Center is the main attraction in the small fishing town of Grundarfjordur. It is a center dedicated to communication and serving visitors to the town, with an internet café, a small cinema and a tourist information office. In addition to this, it houses a small local history museum showcasing rural life in Iceland since the 1900s.
