Green Messengers - Green HI Hostels

Green Messengers - Green HI Hostels

18. August 2017

The "green messengers" explore different of ways to illustrate and explain through practical works, speeches and printed materials how environmental/sustainability matters are tied in with our methods of travelling, daily life and the actions of each individual.

The basic aim of the “GREEN HOSTELS” project is to raise awareness about sustainability issues, among the local community, international guests of HI Iceland and the in-house team.

The goals are:
  1. Maintaining the already developed Sustainability Policy.
  2. Development of means to make employees and guests (individuals and groups) aware of best sustainable practices that reduce their impact on nature and increase eco-consciousness in their daily life. We encourage volunteers to pass the environmental message to a wider audience.

"Green messengers" are best known for their events that they organize for everyone, for free. They range from raising environmental issues and putting theory into practice to personal development and general exploration of Iceland.

Swap 'til You Drop
Swap 'til You Drop is a regular monthly event at Loft Hostel (Bankastræti 7a).
Going from a perspective that "One's man trash is another man's treasure", we provide a space for people to come and share with others things they don't need anymore. The event has a multiple use:
  • implementing eco-friendly actions in the everyday life.
  • enrichening the local community by offering a unique event.
  • promoting other organizations, actions and activities with a strong environmental background.

Once Upon a Human
Once Upon a Human is a regular monthly event taking place at Loft Hostel.
Going from the idea that people are similar to books, offering to tell us stories to cry or to laugh at, we are organizing a human library.

"Never judge books by their covers, nor people by their appearances."
Come and get to know random strangers - the human-books will be read by one person or more at the same time. The readers will have a chance to ask as many questions as they want slowly getting immersed in its stories...

Up-cycling Café
"One man's trash is another man´s treasure" - indeed!
Started out of an interest from members of the local community, the Up-cycling Café has already became a recurring event. The event is imagined as an OPEN SPACE where people are welcomed to share their own ideas and experience on topic contributing to the general atmosphere.
So far we learned how to create: tetrapak-wallets, scrap-paper-notebooks/notepads, can(dle)-holders, t-shirt-bags and scarves,... And we are open for many new ideas!

Cine Forum
Although focused on movies, Cine Forum is imagined as a discussion and exploration of deeper meanings behind some of the popular movie titles. Taking into consideration the attraction factor, educational impact and the absence of such event in Iceland, Cine Forum strives to help people watch movies from a different perspective, learning something more about themselves in the process.

Green Screen
Green Screen is a regular movie night. The aim of it is to create awareness about environmental issues and to promote a better knowledge of the Icelandic culture among our international guests and staff. It is also a free cultural activity that aims to encourage education, understanding and interaction between people from different nationalities. There are even popcorns!
