Swan Certificate

Our guiding principle for offering guests facilities, services and recreation is responsible treatment of nature and the environment.

To ensure that we can fulfill this, in our daily work, we found a tool which helps us to achieve this challenging commitment, and Reykjavík City Hostel decided to apply for Swan certification.

Swan is an official Nordic eco certificate which demonstrates that a product or service is a good environmental choice. Now, everything from washing-up liquid to furniture and hotels can carry the Swan label, so finally consumers have the opportunity to choose environmental more friendly products without compromising the quality.

The Swan organisation checks on regular basis that products fulfill the Swan criteria, using methods such as samples from independent laboratories, certificates and control visits and in this way assures independent surveillance.

To become a Swan certified product or service is a long process, in which is necessary to adapt the business to a comprehensive set of green rules and requirements, which are not static but change with time in order to comply with the newest legislative and new green trends.

In June 2004, Reykjavík City Hostel received Swan certification and in 2010 Reykjavík Downtown Hostel followed. Receiving the certificate does not put the work to a halt, an important part is to sustain high level of green services and continuously improve them. So far we have been successful in this demanding task thanks to dedicated staff and support from the guests. According to our statistics at least 92% of guests support our green efforts.
