Social Support for Asylum Seekers and Refugees

HI Iceland and the Icelandic Red Cross have cooperated on various projects with asylum seekers and refugees.

HI Iceland has been at the forefront of sustainability and nature conservation for a long time, and is now taking steps towards social responsibility in cooperation with the Red Cross in Iceland. The aim of these projects is to express hospitability to both asylum seekers and refugees as that is one of the core values of HI Iceland.

HI Iceland has held welcome afternoons with refreshments at Reykjavík City HI Hostel and at the Red Cross centres in Reykjavík and Hafnarfjörður, and invited people who live outside the Reykjavík area on a weekend trip to the city and assisted with the trip and plans for the weekend.

The core of this cooperation, and the most popular one, are short trips that HI Iceland and the Red Cross have organised within and close to the city. For example: accessible and easy hikes, barbeque trips, and so forth. Two trips have taken place in May 2017. At the beginning of the month, there was a trip to Viðey island in cooperation with Elding Whale Watching. The participants received an introduction to the history of the island on behalf of the Reykjavík Art Museum, and there was a barbeque and outdoor games on the island before the group sailed back to Reykjavík harbour.

On 18th of May, HI Iceland and the Icelandic Red Cross planned a trip to Hellisheiði Power Plant and Hveragerði. The group received a very informative introduction at the power plant and at Kjörís ice cream factory, and was finally well received at the hot spring park in Hveragerði.
