HI Sustainability Fund 2015 - First stage

HI Iceland and Landvernd have joined forces on a land reclamation project and together they have already planted 880 trees in Þjófafoss!

The „Restore Our Land“ project has been funded by the HI Sustainability Fund (more information here) and its main aim is to restore degraded land not accessible by machineries.

Iceland has long suffered from severe land degradation and desertification. Over 95% of original native birch woodland is lost since human settled the island one thousand years ago and about 40% of the country is now a barren desert or otherwise poorly vegetated. This pilot project forms the first phase of a larger participatory restoration project which HI Iceland plans to start with Landvernd, Iceland´s leading environmental NGO.

Here is HI Iceland’s project: Restore Our Land

In this first stage of the project the participants have measured the vegetation cover of the degraded area in order to get a baseline and be able to compare the outcome of our efforts. The team has then planted the small birch trees and used inorganic fertilizers for the soil.

In September 2016 the team will return to the restoration site to measure the changes in vegetation cover and estimate the carbon sequestration of our restoration efforts.

The day was a success and all participants have highly enjoyed bringing their contribution.

The team looks forward to develope the project further with Landvernd!
