Green Messengers HI Hostels in Reykjavík

We are so-called Green Messengers, volunteering at HI hostels in Reykjavík. Our main aim is to raise awareness of environmental protection, sustainability, eco-travelling etc.

The aim within the leading team of HI-Iceland is to make the Reykjavík HI Hostels models of excellence in the field of quality management and leaders in environmental/sustainability management. For many years the team has worked on constantly developing and implementing the Hostels' own Sustainability Policy and methods into daily procedures. Our biggest challenge is to train and maintain the system for the long term, finding ways to promote our vision to guests in a diverse and colourful ways in order to influence them as they travel within our beautiful and fragile environment.

Our project, called Green Hostels, is funded by the Erasmus+ and our aim as EVS (European Voluntary Service) volunteers is to explore a range of ways to illustrate and explain through practical works, speeches and printed materials how environmental/sustainability matters are tied in with our methods of travelling, daily life at the hostels and outside of it and the actions of each individual.

All guests of the hostels are kindly asked to take part in the sustainable work both at home and abroad. To make this easier HI Iceland hostels offer various tips on how to travel more sustainably, many of which also apply when returning home. The three R’s of sustainability, reduce, reuse, recycle, apply everywhere in the world. Don’t think your choice doesn’t matter; start with the little things, and work your way through it. Together we will make a difference!

All 3 Reykjavík HI Hostels are labelled by the Swan – the Nordic Ecolabel, which is the official label of the Nordic countries that demonstrates that a product or a service is a good environmental choice.

More than this, all 3 hostels have been recognized by TripAdvisor as GreenLeaders, Gold level!

The other HI Iceland hostels which are particularly dedicated to sustainability are called Green Hostels and are specially labelled to make it easier for travellers to go for a more sustainable choice.

We look forward to welcoming you in our activities! Our events are open for everyone: guests staying at the hostels, local community, staff and people of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds. An open mind is all you need!

Feel free to send us your ideas or contact us to organize together eco-related events at the hostels!
