HI Iceland is thrilled to announce that Gaulverjaskóli, Reyðarfjörður, Vagnsstaðir and Vík hostels have proudly been awarded the Green Hostel recognition for their work towards sustainability.
These dedicated hostels have fulfilled the additional HI Iceland environmental standards and have been audited by a professional consulting agency, named Alta. The criteria emphasizes on topics like consumption, reusing and recycling, pollution, energy and water, transportation, external surroundings and environmental education.
Through the Green Hostel logo, HI Iceland recognizes and shows appreciation for the hostels‘ contribution towards preserving and improving Iceland's fragile and unique environment, keeping in mind the coming generation's benefit.
One of the main objectives of HI Iceland is to offer guests facilities, services and recreation where responsible treatment of natural and social surroundings, and environment in general, are the guiding principles. From its constitution in 1939, the focus has been on promoting environmental issues as stated in its mission; "To promote the education of all young people of all nations, but specially young people of limited means, by encouraging in them a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside and an appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities in all parts of the world”. Since 2003 the environmental and social aspects have become a mainstay of the organization’s Quality Standards.
The Green Hostel criteria was created in order to make it easier for travellers to go for a greener choice. By working on our sustainable quality we choose to contribute towards a style of travelling that increases people's knowledge of their environment, concern for nature and respect for the cultural values of cities and towns in all parts of the world.
We acknowledge the impact our hostels can have on the surrounding environment and we kindly ask our guests to take part in the sustainability work, both in Iceland and at home. The sustainability standards, constantly revised and improved, represent the organization’s guiding light for sustainable tourism, aiming at reducing the impact caused by travellers.
