Let´s celebrate the First Day of Summer, 24th of April!

Being in Iceland now, it may not feel or look like summer, but Icelanders celebrate this official first day of summer every year. It is a relief that the long winter is behind us and bright summer days and nights are ahead. Just a bit of history: The first day of summer is the first Thursday after April 18th and it refers to the Old Norse Calendar that divided the year into only two seasons, winter and summer.  And some fun history bits: If the night between the last day of winter and the first day of summer freeze together, i.e. if the temperature drops below zero during the night,  the summer will be a good one. Icelanders celebrate the First day of summer all around the country with parades, sporting events and outdoor entertainment.  "Gleðilegt sumar" to you all :-)
